Берли́н (нем. Berlin) — столица (с 1871) и самый большой город Германии как по количеству населения, так и по размеру территории. После Лондона Берлин — второй по величине город в ЕС.

Кроме того, Берлин — одна из 16 федеральных земель Федеративной Республики Германия. Население 3 388 667 человек (2000). Берлин лежит на реках Шпрее (с этим связано «прозвище» Берлина — «Spree-Athen» — «Афины на Шпрее») и Хафель, в центре федеральной земли Бранденбург, частью которой он не является (с 1920).

Около 1200 года на месте современного Берлина располагались два городка — Кёльн (нем. Cölln) и Берлин. Точная дата получения ими городских прав неизвестна. Городские права Кёльна впервые упоминаются в 1237 году, городские права Берлина — в 1244 году. В 1307 году города объединились в одну административную единицу. В 1400 году население объединённого Берлина составляло 8000 человек.

Берлин был столицей Пруссии, а после создания Германской империи стал и её столицей.

После Второй мировой войны Берлин был разделён на зоны оккупации между СССР и союзниками (хотя и находился в советской зоне оккупации Германии). Позднее зона оккупации союзников была преобразована в Западный Берлин, имевший особый статус, но фактически входивший в состав ФРГ. Отсутствие чёткой физической границы между зонами приводило к частым конфликтам и массовой утечке специалистов ГДР в Западный Берлин. Правительство ГДР отделило Западный Берлин так называемой «Берлинской стеной» (13 августа 1961 года). Берлинская стена, просуществовавшая до 1989 года, стала одним из символов холодной войны.

География Берлина

Берлин расположен на равнине, окружающей русло реки Шпре, приблизительно в 180 км от Балтики. Эта река протекает через всю столицу. К западу от центра города, близ Шпандау, с ней соединяется река Хафель. Обе водные артерии в окрестностях Берлина протекают через ряд озер, окруженных небольшими рощами, оставшимися от древних лесов.

В Берлине господствует континентальный климат. Лето жаркое, зима холодная и снежная. В год выпадает в среднем 580 мм осадков. Среднесуточная температура летом находится в пределах +18° С, зимой опускается до -1° С.
